Softball Drops Double Header Against Virginia State, 7-8, 1-3

PETERSBURG, VA--The Richard Bland College of William & Mary softball team dropped both games to Virginia State with scores of 7-8 and 1-3 on Wednesday evening.

The Statesmen are now 14-20 on the season, while Virginia State improves to 17-21. RBC will next play at home on Wednesday, April 24 at 3 pm and 5 pm against Louisburg College.

GAME ONE

The Statesmen opened up their scoring in the second inning when freshman Brittany Cobb forced a fielder's choice, scoring one run. RBC was able to produce four runs in the third inning. The team's offense for the third inning came from a single by sophomore Kayla Hand, a fielder's choice by Cobb, and a double by sophomore Jez Chitty. Sophomore Megan Vincent took the defeat for Richard Bland. She lasted four innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs while striking out five. Sophomore Joana Holland came to pitch in relief for the Statesmen. She lasted two innings, striking out four. RBC totaled nine hits in the game. Hand and freshman Madison Kelly each earned two hits to lead the team.

GAME TWO

The Statesmen fell behind early and couldn't come back in game two. Virginia State earned one run in the first inning on an error. Freshman Kiara Toler took the loss for RBC. She allowed five hits and three runs over six innings, striking out three. Freshman Erin Doyle, Hand, sophomore Jasmine Turner, sophomore Skyler Bagnall, and sophomore Taylor Bilyard each managed one hit to lead the team.

Head coach Troy Jacobs stated, "We made sure to get everyone in tonight. We used these two games to prepare for regional play. We had items we wanted to work on and we succeeded by having all of our players play in the games."
