Softball Split Sophomore Day Doubleheader Against Spartanburg, 6-12, 2-1

PETERSBURG, VA--The Richard Bland College of William & Mary softball team split their doubleheader against Spartanburg Methodist with scores of 6-12 and 2-1 on Saturday evening. This was the last home game of the season and was the team's sophomore day. The sophomores that will be leaving this year are Haley Lumpkin, Jez Chitty, Kayla Hand, Megan Vincent, Skyler Bagnall, Katie Haney, Jasmine Turner, Erin Doyle, Joana Holland, Taylor Bilyard, and Allison Jarrett.

The Statesmen are now 15-21 on the season, while Spartanburg changes to 20-24. RBC will next play in the Region X Championships on May 3 in Spartanburg, SC.

GAME ONE

The Statesmen watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 12-6 defeat to Spartanburg. Spartanburg was able to score on a double by Moore and a double by Cannon. RBC was able to collect 12 hits while Spartanburg had 13. The Statesmen put up three runs in the fourth inning. The rally was led by a single by sophomore Skyler Bagnall, a sac fly by sophomore Erin Doyle, and a double by sophomore Katie Haney.  Sophomore Megan Vincent was in the circle for RBC. She surrendered five runs on eight hits over four innings, striking out three. Sophomore Joana Holland threw five innings in relief. Haney led the team with three hits.

GAME TWO

Both teams were strong in the pitcher's circle, but RBC was able to stay on top and defeat Spartanburg 2-1. Freshman Kiara Toler took the win for the Statesmen in the circle. She lasted seven innings, allowing ten hits and one run while striking out three and walking one. Doyle, freshman Kendra Cattanach, and freshman Teri Jackson all had one hit to lead the team.
