Women's Volleyball Splits Matches to Open 2018 Season

SANDHILLS, NC -- The Richard Bland College of William & Mary women's volleyball started off its 2018 season by splitting a pair of matches at Sandhills Community College.

Richard Bland is now 1-1 on the young season, and will host Pitt Communitiy College on Monday, August 27 at 6:30 pm in Statesman Hall.

The Statesmen started the season defeating Sandhills Community College, last year's Region X Division 3 Champs, in four sets (25-18, 24-26, 25-12, 25-22). RBC was led by Harper Smith with 16 kills, 11 digs, and 5 blocks. Clara Smith contributed 9 kills and 3 blocks, while Jada Evans put up 21 digs.

In their second match, RBC lost a tough battle against Marshalltown Community College in four sets (21-25, 19-25, 25-20, 14-25). Smith had 18 kills and 11 digs, along with Lauryn Basl's 34 assists. Tabatha also led the way with 8 kills and 10 digs.

"I was extremely proud of how we competed today," said head coach Scott Newton. "This was a major improvement from last season. To beat a team that won its region last year and then turnaround and compete with a NJCAA Division 1 team from the Midwest was a great learning opportunity for us. I am excited so see us improve each and every day."
