Women's Volleyball Turns a Tough Loss into a Great Win

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA -- The women's volleyball team of Richard Bland College of William & Mary used a learning moment from their first game of the day today to empower them to a second game victory with a convincing performance.

The team now is 9-7 for the 2019 season and will next travel to Maryland to play Montgomery College at 6 pm on Tuesday, October 1.  The team played Montgomery in their second game of the season, where their opponent came away with the victory, but RBC hopes for a different result this time around.

The first match of the day for the Statesmen faced them up against Monroe College out of New York.  Monroe came ready to play today and outmatched the Statesmen during the match, beating the team 0-3.  Ayanna Swan ended the match with 7 kills and 4 digs and Sierra Spade had 14 digs and 1 ace.

The Statesmen women would not let that same result happen twice, as they prepared for a match with in-state opponent, NOVA CC.  The ladies of RBC would let it be known that the last match was behind them and they were not the same team.  The team helped its cause by improving their hitting percentage by almost .500 from the first game.  Led by Ayanna Swan on the outside, with 16 kills, 3 blocks, and 2 aces, RBC controlled the match after winning the first set, 25-20.  They would go on to beat NOVA 25-11 and 25-16 in the second and third sets.  Setter Anna Ney would total 29 assists and 3 digs and middle blocker Heather Phelps added in 5 kills, 5 blocks, and 2 digs for the Statesmen in addition to the rest of the good play from the team.
