GIBSON SEALS BIG WIN OVER PITT C.C.

PETERSBURG, Va., (Jan. 26, 2016) -- When the Richard Bland College men's basketball team needed leadership from its sophomore captain, Troy Gibson stepped up in a big way.

With 7.6 seconds remaining in the game, Gibson connected on a driving layup and an ensuing free throw when he was fouled, to lift the Richard Bland College men's basketball team to an exciting 83-80 comeback victory over visiting Pitt C.C. last Wednesday.

Gibson's basket capped a frenetic comeback for the Statesmen, who trailed 80-76 with 1:35 to play against a high-scoring Pitt team that came into the game averaging 91.7 points a game, tenth best in NJCAA Division II. His tremendous play has earned him RBC Student-Athlete of the Week honors.
On two occasions Gibson's play led to the RBC victory.
Down 80-76, Richard Bland was able to draw within 80-78 when Gibson followed a missed free throw by freshman Jordan Griggs with a sensational tip-in.  Tied 80-80 with time running out, sophomore guard Gerard Dean-McBride found Gibson slicing to the basket. The sophomore contorted his body through three Pitt defenders and his layup twisted around the rim and fell through. He was fouled on the play and his made free throw led to the 83-80 RBC lead with eight seconds remaining.
After two games postponed due to Winter Storm Jonas, the Statesmen will be back in action hosting No. 11 nationally-ranked Patrick Henry on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 7:00 p.m.
