Mewhirter Named Esports Coordinator and Head Coach

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – Cameron Mewhirter, has been named the first Coordinator and Head Coach of the inaugural Esports team at Richard Bland College of William & Mary. The announcement came from Scott Newton, Director of Student Life & Athletics.

 

The Virginia native's experience goes back to August 2020, when he held roles as the President, Vice President, and Treasurer of the Coastal Carolina University CINO Esports Club. Within the club, he managed a 50+ member student Esports organization competing in leagues and local tournaments. Mewhirter also organized a budget for expansion using funds from club fundraisers, events, and regular fees.

 

Mewhirter went on to become the Assistant Tournament Organizer for the Beast in the East VI in Hampton, Virginia. There, he transported and setup over 60 arcade machines to be used in the event venue, provided live-stream commentary, and assisted updating virtual brackets for multiple fighting game tournaments. From there, Mewhirter became the Caster and Assistant Tournament Organizer with the Collegiate Fighting Game Conference. He was responsible for providing live-stream commentary and assisted updating virtual brackets for multiple fighting game tournaments.

 

"We are excited to welcome Cameron Mewhirter to Richard Bland College," says Athletic Director Newton. "Mewhirter's experience as a Tournament Organizer at the collegiate level will be a great asset to RBC and have an immediate impact on the Statesmen Esports program."

 

The Richard Bland College Esports program will offer competitive varsity teams in a variety of popular titles. Student-athletes will compete against Region 10 contenders Wake Technical Community College, Johnston Community College, Guilford Technical Community College, and many other NJCAA institutions, fostering teamwork, communication, and strategic thinking.

 

The Esports program will be housed on campus in the Academic Innovation Center, equipped with gaming equipment and comfortable seating for players, and spectators. The dedicated space will foster a sense of community and provide student-athletes with the resources they need to excel.

 

Mewhirter is a 2022 graduate of Coastal Carolina University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Sustainability and Coastal Resilience, with a Business and Economics concentration. In May of 2024 he received his Esports Management Graduate Certificate from Shenandoah University, and is on track to complete his Master's Degree in Business Administration in December 2025.
