No. 17 BRYANT & STRATTON DEFEATS No. 3 RICHARD BLAND

NORFOLK, Va. – In the first meeting between two Region X ranked opponents, it was the No. 17 Bryant & Stratton Bobcats (13-4, 7-2) who prevailed over the No. 3 Richard Bland Statesmen (14-1, 6-1) by a score of 66-64 on Saturday afternoon at Maury High School.

 

The Statesmen started the first half with a 9-5 lead at the 14:06 mark but the Bobcats would ignite a run that would eventually lead to RBC trailing 21-19 with six minutes left before halftime.

 

Bryant & Stratton maintained the lead going into intermission, 29-27.

 

As the second half got underway, both teams continued to exchange buckets but the Statesmen still found themselves trailing 42-39 with under thirteen minutes left to play.

 

RBC continued to fight and tied the game at 62 apiece with 1:25 remaining.

 

The contest would be tied one more time with a score of 64-64 as 12 seconds showed on the game clock, the Statesmen had possession but was unable to hold onto it as the Bobcats stole the ball to score a layup which sealed the win.

Tavon Mealy (Richmond, VA) led the Statesmen in scoring with 18 points and nine rebounds, following LeQuan Thomas (Virginia Beach, VA) with 13 points while Averyl Ugba (Silver Springs, MD) charted a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. 

This is the first loss for the Statesmen who set a schools record for best start in program history at 14-0. RBC will return to action on Wednesday, January 14th when they travel to arch-rival and No. 1 ranked Louisburg for a Region X matchup. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
