No. 14 Richard Bland Plays In FCC Tip-Off Mixer This Weekend

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- The Richard Bland College men's basketball team will travel to Frederick, Maryland this weekend, November 4-5, to participate in the FCC Tip-Off Mixer Tournament hosted by Frederick Community College.  The Statesmen (1-0), ranked No. 14 in the NJCAA Division II Preseason Poll, will play Valley Forge (Pa.) Military College on Friday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m., before facing Delaware Technical Community College on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Statesmen
No. 14 Richard Bland is 1-0 following an impressive 87-63 season-opening home win past No. 18 Northern Virginia Community College (Recap & Box Score) on Nov. 1.  The Statesmen, who are an outstanding 75-25 (.750) over the past three-plus seasons, are coached by head coach Chuck Moore, who is in his fourth season, and assisted by fourth-year assistant coach Brian Henderson, second-year assistant coach Preston Beverly and first-year graduate assistant coach Mike Wynn.  Through one game, Richard Bland is led in scoring by local sophomore standout Gevon Arrington/Petersburg, who scored a game-high 20 points against Northern Virginia, adding six rebounds and a game-high three steals.  Freshman Brandon Henry/Chester added 11 points and six rebounds off the bench against the Nighthawks, while sophomore Deandre Clark/Orange and freshman Ricky Hicks/Bronx, New York each contributed eight points with Hicks adding five rebounds and a game-high five assists, as well.  Richard Bland is averaging 87.0 points per game, while allowing just 63.0 points per game to opponents. 

Spreading the Minutes
Richard Bland had 10 different players play at least 10 minutes in the opener against Northern Virginia, including four players who played at least 20 minutes.  All 13 Statesmen who dressed and played versus the Nighthawks scored points.

Scouting Valley Forge & Delaware Tech
Valley Forge (0-0) is playing its first game of the season against the Statesmen on Friday.  Delaware Tech (1-0) opened its campaign with a 91-66 road win at Rowan College of Gloucester County (N.J.) on Nov. 1.  Both Valley Forge and Delaware Tech are members of NJCAA Division II, Region 19.

Richard Bland has never played Valley Forge or Delaware Tech previously in the sport of men's basketball.

2015 NJCAA Division II National Champions
Richard Bland won the 2015 NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship, defeating John Wood (Ill.) Community College 64-53 on March 21, 2015 at the Mary Miller Gymnasium on the campus of Danville Community College in Danville, Illinois.  The Statesmen finished with a school-record of 32-4, winning the national title in only their second year back in action following a 20-year hiatus from competitive sports at Richard Bland College of William & Mary, Virginia's only public, residential two-year college.

Richard Bland will play on the road at NJCAA Division II The College of Southern Maryland in La Plata, Maryland on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m.  The Statesmen will travel to New Rochelle, New York to participate in the Monroe Classic hosted by NJCAA Division I Monroe College on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 12-13.  The Statesmen will play NJCAA Division II Frederick (Md.) Community College on Nov. 12 at 2 p.m., before facing host Monroe on Nov. 13 at 2 p.m.
