No. 6 Richard Bland Plays At Rival Patrick Henry On Wednesday

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College will play on the road at Region X Conference and in-state rival Patrick Henry Community College in men's basketball on Wednesday night, January 25 at 7 p.m. in Martinsville.  The nationally-ranked Statesmen, No. 6 in this week's NJCAA Division II Top 20 Poll, feature an overall record of 16-3, including 9-1 in Region X, with 12 wins in their last 13 games played.  The host Patriots are 10-5 overall, 8-1 in Region X, as it will be a battle for first place in the conference.

Scouting the Statesmen
No. 6 Richard Bland is 16-3 overall after an 87-54 road win at Bryant & Stratton College on Jan. 22.  The Statesmen, who are an outstanding 90-28 (.763) over the past four seasons, are coached by head coach Chuck Moore, who is in his fourth season, and assisted by fourth-year assistant coach Brian Henderson, second-year assistant coach Preston Beverly and first-year graduate assistant coach Mike Wynn.

Through 19 games, Richard Bland has been led in scoring by local 6-3 sophomore guard Gevon Arrington/Petersburg, who is averaging 12.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists.  He is followed by 6-4 sophomore guard Deandre Clark/Orange, who is averaging 11.9 points (49 3FGs), 3.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists, while 6-9 sophomore center Jaquan Wooten/Kinston, North Carolina is averaging 11.6 points (66 FG%), 9.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocks with eight double-doubles.  Richard Bland is averaging 83.0 points per game, while allowing just 67.7 points to opponents for a scoring margin of +15.3.

Scouting Patrick Henry
Patrick Henry is 10-5 overall after an 89-61 home win past Guilford Technical (N.C.) Community College on Jan. 23, and is coached by Kenneth Wade.  The Patriots have limited stats reported, but do show four players averaging double-figure points, including sophomores Keyshawn Johnson (18.2), Ta'vion Petty (15.0), Gabriel Courtney (13.6) and Kyle Green (12.4).  PHCC averages 88.7 points, while allowing 82.0 points to opponents for a scoring margin of +6.7. 

Series History
Richard Bland and Patrick Henry are playing for the eighth time in the sport of men's basketball, and the Patriots lead the series at 4-3, including three wins last season.  Patrick Henry won by scores of 95-88 in overtime at Statesman Hall (1/27/16), 68-64 in Martinsville (2/17/16) and 64-52 at Statesman Hall during the Region X Tournament (2/28/16). 

Back Where It Began
Richard Bland head coach Chuck Moore (138-44 overall, .758) began his collegiate coaching career at Patrick Henry, leading the Patriots for two seasons (2007-09).  He posted an outstanding overall record of 48-16 (.750), including a perfect 16-0 record in Region X during 2008-09. Coach Moore was named the Region X Coach of the Year that season, helping Patrick Henry earn a No. 11 national ranking. His 2007-08 team won the VCCS State Championship, and Moore's success with the Patriots earned him election into the PHCC Hall of Fame.
