No. 5 Richard Bland Travels To Catawba Valley (N.C.) On Saturday

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College travels to play on the road at Region 10 Conference member Catawba Valley (N.C.) Community College on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 3 p.m.  The nationally-ranked Statesmen, No. 5 in this week's NJCAA Division II Top 20 Poll, feature an overall record of 19-3, including 12-1 in Region 10, with six-straight wins and 15 wins in their last 16 games.  The Red Hawks are 15-7 overall, 9-4 in Region 10.

Scouting the Statesmen
No. 5 Richard Bland is 19-3 overall after a 71-48 home win past Lenoir (N.C.) Community College on Feb. 1.  The Statesmen, who are an outstanding 93-28 (.769) over the past four seasons, are coached by head coach Chuck Moore, who is in his fourth season, and assisted by fourth-year assistant coach Brian Henderson, second-year assistant coach Preston Beverly and first-year graduate assistant coach Mike Wynn.

Through 22 games, Richard Bland has been led in scoring by 6-4 sophomore guard Deandre Clark/Orange, who is averaging 12.5 points (57 3FGs), 3.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists.  He is followed by local 6-3 sophomore guard Gevon Arrington/Petersburg, who is averaging 12.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists, while 6-9 sophomore center Jaquan Wooten/Kinston, North Carolina is averaging 11.3 points (65 FG%), 9.2 rebounds and 3.1 blocks with eight double-doubles.  Richard Bland is averaging 83.3 points per game, while allowing just 66.8 points to opponents for a scoring margin of +16.5. 

Scouting Catawba Valley
Catawba Valley is 15-7 overall after an 87-74 road win at Guilford Tech (N.C.) on Feb. 1, and is coached by sixth-year head coach Bryan Garmroth.  The Red Hawks have two players averaging double-figure points in sophomores Derick Brewer (14.4) and 6-8 Emmanuel Wembi (11.3).  CVCC averages 84.3 points, while allowing 76.8 points for a scoring margin of +7.5.

Series History
Richard Bland and Catawba Valley have played seven times previously in the sport of men's basketball, and the Statesmen lead the series, 5-2.  Richard Bland won the first meeting between the two schools this season by a score of 89-66 on December 3, 2016 in Statesman Hall, getting 19 points each from Gevon Arrington and freshman Tim Bing Jr./District Heights, Maryland, as well as 12 points from sophomore Myles Markland/Petersburg.  Myles Williams scored a game-high 20 points for the Red Hawks.  CVCC, however, won a pair of close three-point games played last season … defeating the Statesmen 67-64 on Dec. 5, 2015 in North Carolina and 75-72 on Feb. 6, 2016 in Statesman Hall.

Chuck Moore was selected as the Week 11 HoopDirt.com Junior College Coach of the Week presented by The Hoop Group.  Richard Bland won Region 10 road games last week at rival Patrick Henry (83-61) and at Guilford Tech (101-82).  The No. 5 Statesmen have made a steady climb in the national rankings this season after being ranked No. 14 in the preseason poll.  Moore is now eligible to receive the HoopDirt.com National Coach of the Year Award which will be announced at the conclusion of the 2016-17 college basketball season.

Up Next
Richard Bland will return home to welcome region archrival and nationally-ranked No. 8 Louisburg (N.C.) College next Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in Statesman Hall.  That game has been designated as the school's annual Black Out Game, along with it being Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce Night, as well as Richard Bland College Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night.  All fans are encouraged to wear black attire to the highly-anticipated contest, and the first 50 students in attendance will receive a commemorative t-shirt. 

The Statesmen remain at home to complete the regular season, as the Louisburg game is the first of six consecutive contests in Statesman Hall over the next three weeks.  The other five include Dundalk (Md.) (Sunday, Feb. 12, 3 p.m.), Patrick Henry (Wednesday, Feb. 15, 7 p.m.), Bryant & Stratton (Saturday, Feb. 18, 3 p.m.), Vance-Granville (N.C.) (Wednesday, Feb. 22, 7 p.m.) and Wake Tech (N.C.) (Saturday, Feb. 25, 7 p.m.).
