Richard Bland Names Marvin Trotman Athlete of the Week

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College freshman men's basketball standout Marvin Trotman/Virginia Beach has been named the Athletics Department's Athlete of the Week for the period February 6-12.  The 6-4 guard led the Statesmen (17-6, 11-4 Region 10) to an 80-67 home win past Catawba Valley (N.C.) on Feb. 10, following a 75-69 road setback at No. 15 Louisburg (N.C.) on Feb. 7. 

Trotman scored a season-high 13 points against the Red Hawks in Statesman Hall, making 5-8 field goals, including 2-5 on three-point field goals, and 1-3 at the free throw line in just nine minutes off the bench.  He contributed two points, one rebound and one assist in seven minutes against the nationally-ranked Hurricanes.

Trotman has played in 21 games this season, averaging 3.9 points, 1.0 assists and 8.3 minutes, while shooting 42% (29-69) from the field, including 32% (10-31) on three-pointers, and 61% (14-23) at the free throw line.  He adds 18 rebounds, three steals and one block, while posting season-highs of 13 points, six assists and three rebounds.

Q: How does it feel to be named Richard Bland Athlete of the Week?
MT: It's an honor, and hopefully I can earn more awards in the future.

Q: How did you get started in your sport and how long have you played?
MT: My father used to put me in basketball camps for fun and I just gained a love for it.  I've been playing for as long as I can remember, and AAU started in about sixth grade.

Q: What do you like most about your team?
MT: How close we are, we have a very tight bond that I think will take us far.  Also, everyone is very talented.

Q: Who is your funniest teammate/why?
MT: Sterling Carrington.  There is never a dull moment with him, he is always making a joke out of something or just talking.

Q: Do you have any pregame rituals/superstitions?
MT: Listening to music, texting my dad and always praying.

Q: What is your favorite place on campus/why?
MT: Statesman Hall.  I am always in the gym working on my game.  There are always new things you can learn.

Q: What is your favorite class/professor/why?
MT: English.  It's always fun to express your feelings on paper and also read other people's opinions.  We are always learning something new and interesting.
