Men's Basketball Fall to Brunswick, 79-68

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA -- The Richard Bland College of William and Mary men's basketball team was defeated Saturday, February 9 by the Brunswick Community College Dolphins with a final score of 79-68.

The defeat brings Richard Bland to 6-15 on the season while Brunswick improves to 20-5. The Statesmen will host Spartanburg Methodist on Tuesday, February 12 at 7 pm in Statesman Hall.

Saturday evenings game started with a back and forth battle between the Dolphins and Statesmen. Costly turnovers early in the game made things a little more difficult for Richard Bland. The Dolphins took the lead with 8:30 remaining in the first with a score of 23-21. This started a 10-2 point run until the three-minute mark. Before halftime, the Statesmen found a small groove of their own which brought them ending the half trailing by 11 with a score of 36-25.

The second half brought more of a point deficient for the Statesmen who could not connect from behind the arc and had more costly turnovers. This allowed the Dolphins to lead by as much as 15 points with 5:57 remaining in the second half. With the score 69-54, the Statesmen needed a strong run to get themselves back in the game. Creating stops on the defensive end and executing on the offensive end allowed the Statesmen to go on a two minute 11-0 point run which brought the score to 69-65. Unfortunately, the point run would not be enough as the Dolphins would eventually start to pull away again to close the game. Freshman Jalen Spicer led the Statesmen with 14 points followed closely by sophomore Sterling Carrington with 13 points. The Dolphins had three players in double digits, led by Silas Love with 20 points.
