High Energy Win for Men's Basketball

High Energy Win for Men's Basketball

By Bryant Marks

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA -- Richard Bland College's men's basketball team brought the energy in front of a packed house and gave the fans a show in a big win against Pitt Community College, winning 68-62 on Wednesday.

The men's team is now 4-4 through eight games this season.  Bland next plays Region X DI rival, Cape Fear Community College, in Wilmington, North Carolina on December 4.

The Statesmen opened up the game with the energy of the crowd flowing through them, getting out on the fast break as much as they could.  The team hit their stride as they swarmed Pitt possession after possession midway through the first, turning them over and converting for points on the offensive end.  Kenneth Southerland could not be stopped on his drives to the basket in the first half as he scored 14 of his 24 total points and threw down a monster alley-oop to end the half.  The Statesmen would lead the Bulldogs big at the half with a score of 37-26.  Coming out for the second half, the team allowed Pitt to slowly creep back into contention, but RBC never allowed them to get closer than 5 points of their lead.  Bland can credit their free-throw shooting at the end of the second half to seal the victory and add another win to the win column.

Having another big game for the Statesmen, Kenneth Southerland poured in 24 points, while Mykai Smith and Corbin Slayton each added in 10 points of their own to cap off another RBC win.
