Watkins Powers Statesmen Past Catonsville

By Alden Di Dio

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA - Freshman, Jared Watkins dropped a career high of 20 points for the Statesmen in the 84-56 win against CCBC Catonsville. Communication and cooperation were key for the team on Friday night as the Statesmen come off a three game cold spell.

The Statesmen move to 10-11 on the season and look to take back-to-back wins as they approach the game on Saturday, February 8 against Caldwell Community College at 3 p.m.

From start to finish, the Statesmen remained consistent throughout the contest. RBC established an early 11-8 lead within the first five minutes of the game. Kenneth Southerland did the usual amount of damage by putting up two pointers and slamming down the ball over the Catonsville defense. Teamwork was evident from the beginning as the Statesmen were generous in passing the ball, which allowed for ample scoring opportunity and holes in the Cardinal defense to reveal themselves. After the first half, the score stood at 42-27 with RBC out in front. As the Statesmen hustled back onto the court for the second half, the team's stamina and energy remained at a high level. The Statesmen kept the Cardinal offense under control by allowing only another 29 points, while RBC scored another 42 points. At the final buzzer, the Statesmen finished on top 84-56.

Head coach, Andrew Lacey was pleased with the boys performance saying the team "played with a lot of energy" and added "they were very unselfish" which allowed for more of the Statesmen to contribute in the win. "Getting to ten wins was very much needed" he said, "the team will go into the game on Saturday with high intensity."
