Basketball Upsets Brunswick In Region 10 Quarterfinals, 81-73

SANDHILLS, NC. -- Led by Kenneth Sutherland with 23 points and Savion Helm with 21, the Richard Bland College men's basketball team upset Brunswick C.C. 81-73 in quarterfinals of the Region 10 Atlantic District Tournament Thursday afternoon at Sandhills C.C.

The No. 5 seeded Statesmen (15-14) avenged two previous losses to No. 4 seeded Brunswick and advances to the semifinals against No.1 seed and nationally-ranked USC Salkehatchie (25-4) on Friday at 1 pm.

Brunswick opened the game on a 10-4 run, but RBC surged ahead 16-12 with 11 minutes to go until halftime. Behind Helm who came off the bench, connected on a big 3-pointer and attacked the rim for layups, the Statesmen held a 34-22 lead at intermission.

In the second half, RBC got strong guard play from Darius Jones and Corbin Slayton, and led by Southerland, who was named to the Region 10 First Team, built a 50-37 lead with 11:48 to go. Late free throws by the Statesmen held off a late Brunswick surge and secured the 81-73 win.
