SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College of William and Mary Men's Basketball team hosted the 2nd annual Statesmen Classic for the opening weekend of NJCAA Basketball. The Classic took place Friday, November 4th and Saturday, November 5th with five other teams involved.
On Friday, November 4th, Richard Bland took on Monroe College in the third game of the day. The Mustangs held a 46-28 lead at the half, and came out victorious, 90-62 to close the evening. Martin Kawa led the scoring for the Statesmen with 14 points. Kawa also chipped in with two rebounds, two steals, two assists, and one block. Ben Jones added 12 points, while Larry Howell pitched in with 10 points, nine rebounds, one block and one steal.
1On Saturday, November 5th, Richard Bland took on Allegany College of Maryland in the final game of the 2nd Annual Statesmen Classic. The Statesmen held a 33-29 lead at the half, but fell short to the Trojans, 70-75. Martin Kawa led the Statesmen with 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Larry Howell notched his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Noryen Lasley also chipped in with nine points and six rebounds for the Statesmen.
The Richard Bland College men's basketball team next hosts Northern Virginia Community College on Wednesday, November 9th. Tip-off is set for 7pm.
