Men’s Basketball Goes 2-0 At Monroe College Invitational

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA - The Richard Bland College men's basketball team moves to 5-2 after boasting a strong outing this weekend at the Monroe College Invitational in New Rochelle, NY. 

 

In day one of the Monroe College Invitational, the Statesmen faced the Trojans of Allegany College of Maryland, for the second meeting of the season. In the first meeting, the Trojans defeated the Statesmen by a narrow five point margin. In the rematch, Richard Bland showed poise and confidence taking down the Trojans by a 22 point margin in the 70-48 victory. The Statesmen held a 31-27 lead at the half, and outscored the Trojans 39-21 in the second, to cruise to victory. Martin Kawa and Eric Wood led the offense for Richard Bland with 16 points each. Wood also tallied seven rebounds, one assist, and one block off the bench. Kawa added six rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Jordan Morris chipped in with 11 points, two rebounds, and two steals in the victory. 

 

In day two of the Monroe College Invitational, Richard Bland rallied back and forth with the Hawks of Hagerstown Community College and would come out victorious 56-51 at the final buzzer. Richard Bland led 27-22 at the half. The Statesmen and Hawks both tallied 29 points in the second half, to pace the narrow victory. Martin Kawa once again led the scoring for Richard Bland with 25 points and added four boards and two steals. Larry Howell chipped in with nine points, six rebounds, and three steals while Kelby Saunders Jr. led the boards with nine and added five points. 

 

The Richard Bland men's basketball team next hosts the Bobcats of Bryant & Stratton (VA) on Wednesday, November 23rd. The non-conference contest is set to tip-off at 7pm.
