Men’s Basketball Goes 1-1 in Conference Play Over Weekend

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Men's Basketball team traveled to Cape Fear Community College Saturday afternoon, and Brunswick Community College Sunday for two conference contests. After completion of both games, the Statesmen moved to 5-11 overall, 3-3 in conference play after defeating the Sea Devils 75-66 and dropping a close battle to the Dolphins, 65-70.

On Saturday, the Statesmen battled the Sea Devils in a fast-paced game, resulting in a 33-33 tie after the first half. In the second half, the Statesmen outscored the Sea Devils by nine, putting up 42 points, to bring home the win. Andy Ramirez led the way, exploding for 22 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Doyle Brown chipped in with 21 points, three steals, one assist, and one block. Jalen Smith tallied his third triple-double of the season with 11 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists, five steals, and one block. Jermaine Coston Jr. added eight points, Dove Fishburne six, Christian Chambers five, and Emmanuel Vonhm two in the win.

Richard Bland shot 51.0% from the field, 30.0% from the perimeter, and 62.9% from the charity stripe.

On Sunday, the Statesmen competed in another tough battle yet again. Richard Bland held a narrow, two-point lead at the break, but were outscored by seven in the second half, falling to the Dolphins 65-70. Vonhm led the way off the bench with 18 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Brown added 15 points, two assists, and one block, while Ramirez had 14 points, five rebounds, two blocks, and one assist. Christian Chambers tallied 11 points and four rebounds, while Jalen Smith had seven rebounds, six assists, four points, three steals, and two blocks. Coston Jr. added four rebounds and two points, and Richard Agbo one rebound in the loss.

Richard Bland shot 40.8% from the field, 33.3% from the perimeter, and 69.0% from the charity stripe.

The Richard Bland College Men's Basketball team next travels to Wake Technical Community College on Wednesday, February 5^th for a 6pm conference contest.
