WILMINGTON, N.C. (Oct. 31, 2015) — In the semifinals of the Region X Championships, No. 1 nationally-ranked Louisburg College earned a 4-1 victory over the Richard Bland College men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon to advance to Sunday's final. The Region X semifinals and finals are being held at Legion Field in Wilmington, N.C.
In a matchup between the No. 1 seeded Hurricanes and No. 4 seeded Statesmen, the Hurricanes scored four unanswered goals before Richard Bland was able to get on the board with a goal in the 80th minute from freshman forward Leonard Oballa (Nairobi, Kenya/Aquinas).
With the loss, the Statesmen conclude their finest season in school history, finishing 10-8-2. Louisburg improves to a lofty 18-1. Louisburg plays the winner of No. 2 Patrick Henry vs. No. 3 Spartanburg Methodist in Sunday's Region X final at 2:30 p.m.
"We missed three very good opportunities today and against a team like Louisburg you have to convert," said Richard Bland head coach Eduardo de Souza. "We didn't play well enough to win today. Too many mistakes against a good team like Louisburg, that capitalizes on mistakes, makes the task harder. We had a good season and despite the result today, proved we were one of the four best teams in Region X."
