SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA -- The Richard Bland College of William & Mary men's soccer team opened its 2018 season by defeating Region X Conference opponent Patrick Henry Community College with a late game goal, 1-0, last night at Statesman Soccer Field.
With the victory, Richard Bland starts the season 1-0-0 and will next face USC Salkehatchie on the road on Friday, August 31 at 2 pm.
RBC's goal was scored late in the second half, at the 87th minute, with a well-placed corner kick from left back Henrique Eichenberger, directly to the head of the Statesmen's holding midfielder, Vandyke Gyau. The Statesmen outshot the Patriots 13-3, dominated most of the game's possession, and had twice as many corner kicks as the Patriots (8 to 4). The Statesmen played a strong defense, organized by center-backs David Comayagua and Max Schobel, resulting in the need of only one save from starting keeper Almir Menezes.
