STATESMEN SOFTBALL TAKES TWO GAMES ON THE ROAD

Martinsville, VA, September 22, 2013- The Richard Bland College softball team have seemed to have found their groove. The Statesmen crossed home plate nine times in the first game against host Patrick Henry, winning 9-1, while handling the Hurricanes of Louisburg College in the second game by the score of 8-3.

The bats of the Statesmen came alive in the first game against Patrick Henry Community College. The team combined for a .368 batting average, and produced nine runs. Shortstop Amberly Alston came through in the top of the fourth inning with a big two RBI double, and ended the game going three for four at the plate.  Krysten Davis also stepped up in the top of the seventh as a pinch hitter driving the ball deep to left field for a stand up double. McKenzie Love pitched all 7 innings and allowed only one run, while striking out four batters.         

Richard Bland took on Louisburg College, an NJCAA Division I program.  Catcher Toria Arnett and pitcher Tara Heatwole were fine-tuned all game, only allowing three runs for the game as Heatwole struck out eight batters.  Left fielder, Rebecca Condrey, also came through with an amazing diving catch into foul territory to help hold the lead for the Statesmen. Big hits continued for Richard Bland including two doubles by Ayannah Bowman-Williams, who also celebrated her 18th birthday. Along with Bowman was Amberly Alston, Taylor Slate, and Krysten Davis who ended the game batting .500. Overall it was an extremely impressive performance by the Statesmen against a Division I program.

The Statesmen are back in action this Saturday, September 28, 2013 and will host Rappahannock Community College on the campus of Richard Bland College. The first game will start at 5:00 p.m. and the second game will start at 7:00 p.m.
