STATESMEN SOFTBALL TAKES TWO TOUGH DEFEATS TO DIVISION I LONGWOOD ON THE ROAD

Farmville, VA, October 5, 2013- The Statesmen travelled to Longwood University to take on the defending 2013 Big South Championship softball team that also earned a spot in the NCAA DI National Tournament. Despite a great effort the Statesmen fell 9-0 and 4-0 in consecutive games.

The first game was highlighted by Taylor Slate beating out an infield hit and finishing up the game going two for two. Liberty transfer, Tara Heatwole came into the game to shut down the Lancer's offense holding them scoreless and striking out two batters back-to-back. She continued to hold Longwood offensively in the second game, allowing only four runs.

Sophomore Sierra Ford was able to shine defensively in centerfield, as well as, producing a hit in the second game. Defensively the Statesmen held their own against an extremely talented team in the second game. The doubleheader provided an opportunity for Richard Bland to face a highly competitive program in preparation for Virginia Tech on October 13, 2013 in Blacksburg, VA.
