Richard Bland Sweeps Pair At Wake Tech (N.C.) 15-1 (5), 9-0 (5)

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Sophomore Brooklynn Bilyard/Culpeper had two hits, including a home run, and five RBIs in the opener, while freshman Mary Simms/Orange had three RBIs in the nightcap, as Richard Bland swept a softball doubleheader at Wake Tech (N.C.) on Wednesday in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Freshman Joana Holland/Manassas earned the complete-game, five-inning pitching victory in the 15-1 opener for the visiting Statesmen (14-7), while Brooklynn Bilyard took the complete-game, five-inning pitching shutout in the 9-0 nightcap against the host Eagles (6-12).

In game one, Richard Bland had 15 runs on 12 hits … scoring two runs in the first inning, three runs in the second and 10 runs in the fourth.  The Statesmen took leads of 2-0 and 5-1 toward the run-rule victory.

Brooklynn Bilyard was 2-4 with the home run – her first of the season -- three runs and five RBIs, while sophomore Ashley Fritz/Chesterfield was 3-3 with a triple, four runs and three RBIs.  Simms was 2-4 with a double, one run and one RBI, and freshman Allison Jarrett/Virginia Beach was 1-1 with two runs and two walks.

Holland (4-1) started in the circle and pitched the 5.0 innings, yielding just one hit and one run, unearned, with two strikeouts and two walks.

In game two, Richard Bland had nine runs on seven hits … scoring three runs in the first inning, one run in the second, one run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth for another run-rule triumph.

Simms was 1-2 with a sacrifice fly, one run and three RBIs, while Fritz was 1-1 with a double, one run, two RBIs and two walks.  Freshman Katie Haney/Burkeville was 1-3 with a double and two RBIs, while sophomore Kay'Lee Justice/Suffolk was 1-1 with a double, two runs, one RBI and two walks, and classmate Kara Morris/Kents Store was 1-1 with a double, two runs and two walks.

Brooklynn Bilyard (5-1) started in the circle and pitched the 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits with one strikeout and two walks.

Richard Bland returns home to welcome Region 10 opponent Southeastern-Whiteville (N.C.) on Thursday, March 29 … a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at the Statesman Softball Field.
