Statesmen Sweep Pair At USC Union, 7-3, 12-8

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA--The Richard Bland College of William & Mary softball team swept its doubleheader against USC Union on Friday afternoon. The Statesmen came together in the second half of both games to take the win with scores of 7-3 and 12-8.

The Statesmen are now 6-11 on the season, while USC Union falls to 7-5. RBC continues its play during Spring Break, next facing Spartanburg Methodist in doubleheader action on Saturday, March 9 at 11 pm and 1 pm in South Carolina.

FIRST GAME

The Statesmen stole the lead late and defeated Union 7-3. The game started off with sophomore Katie Haney driving in one RBI on a single. The game was tied at two with RBC batting in the top of the fifth when an error scored one run to allow RBC to take the lead. Union tried to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning but only was able to tie the game. The Statesmen came back and scored a run in the top of the seventh inning, but Union answered with one of their own runs to tie things once again. RBC scored another run when Union allowed an error. Sophomore Megan Vincent got the win for Richard Bland. She allowed nine hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out eight and walking one. RBC totaled ten hits in the game with Haney, sophomore Skyler Bagnall, sophomore Mary Simms, and sophomore Erin Doyle all having multiple hits. Haney led the Statesmen with three hits in her three at-bats. Richard Bland was sure-handed and did not commit a single error in the field.

SECOND GAME

The Statesmen were able to clinch the lead in the seventh inning for a 12-8 victory over Union. RBC trailed 8-7 in the top of the seventh inning when Haney homered on the first pitch of the at-bat scoring two runs. Sophomore Allison Jarrett made it possible for Haney to get up to bat by drilling one up the middle to keep the inning going with two outs. Sophomore Kayla Hand led the Statesmen to victory by driving in four runs. Hand went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in runs on a double in the third inning and a double in the seventh inning. Richard Bland fired up the offense in the first inning when freshman Erin Doyle singled on a 1-0 count, scoring in one run. Vincent was the winning pitcher for RBC, throwing three and a half innings. She only allowed two runs on two hits, striking out three and walking zero. Sophomore Joana Holland started the game for the Statesmen. She surrendered four runs on four hits over two innings, striking out five and walking one. Haney smacked the only homerun for the Statesmen deep over the left field fence. Richard Bland saw the ball well today, racking up 16 hits in the game. Doyle, sophomore Taylor Bilyard, Simms, Hand, freshman Haley Godfrey, and Haney all managed multiple hits for the Statesmen. Doyle went to lead RBC in hits today going 3-for-5.
