Softball Splits Doubleheader At Home, 18-10, 11-13

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA--The Richard Bland College of William & Mary softball team split its doubleheader against visiting USC Sumter Sunday morning with scores of 18-10 and 11-13.

The Statesmen improve to 14-18 on the season, while USC Sumter falls to 16-16. RBC will next play on Saturday away against Louisburg college at 3 pm and 5 pm.

GAME ONE

The Statesmen were able to steal the lead late in the game to take an 18-10 victory over Sumter. The game was tied at 10-10 with RBC batting in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Kayla Hand drew in a walk scoring one run. In the first inning, sophomore Allison Jarrett's sac fly scored one run for the team. RBC notched six runs in the fifth inning. Sophomore Skyler Bagnall, sophomore Jez Chitty, freshman Teri Jackson, sophomore Katie Haney, and freshman Erin Doyle all contributed in the big inning with RBIs. Freshman Kiara Toler earned the victory in the pitcher's circle for the Statesmen. She allowed eight hits and five runs over four and a third innings, striking out two and walking one. RBC tallied two home runs in the game. Bagnall had a dinger in the fifth inning and sophomore Taylor Bilyard smacked one in the third inning. The Statesmen saw the ball well today and were able to rack up 15 hits in the game. Bagnall, Bilyard, freshman Madison Kelly, and Doyle each managed multiple hits for the team. The team was led by Bagnall who went 4-for-4 at the plate. Bagnall singled in the first, doubled in the third, doubled in the fourth, and then homered in the fifth.

GAME TWO

Despite an 8-run deficit in the fourth inning, RBC almost came back to take the win. The Statesmen were able to tally nine runs in the comeback. Freshman Haley Lumpkin, Haney, Doyle, Jarrett, and Bagnall picked up RBIs to lead the rally. Jarrett drove in four runs in the game. She drove the in runs on a double in the first, a double in the fourth, and a single in the seventh. RBC was able to take the lead in the first inning when Jarrett drove in a run on a double. Sophomore Joana Holland was in the pitcher's circle for the Statesmen. She went four and a third innings, allowing five runs on five hits and struck out four. Richard Bland was able to tally 14 hits in the game. Jarrett and Doyle each had three hits to lead the team.

Head Coach Troy Jacobs stated, "The team is starting to peak."
