Softball Earns Shutout Sweep Against SWCC

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College of William and Mary Softball team moves to 12-12 in conference play, 14-12 overall after traveling to Southwest Virginia Community College Saturday afternoon. 

 

In game 1 with Hart on the mound, Richard Bland shutout Southwest 8-0 in six innings. Hart allowed just six hits in the contest. Richard Bland opened up the scoring in the first inning, when Alexis Brandt singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Richard Bland notched four runs in the second inning. Alyssa Martinez, Emma Fleming, and Lily Curtis all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. Richard Bland racked up 13 hits. Brandt, Martinez, Fleming and Gracie Fisher each racked up multiple hits for the Statesmen. Hart earned the victory in the circle for Richard Bland. The pitcher lasted six innings, allowing six hits and zero runs while striking out 11 and walking zero.

 

In game 2, Richard Bland defeated Southwest 14-0 as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Richard Bland was boosted by Alyssa Martinez who went 4-for-4 at the plate. Martinez doubled in the first, singled in the second, singled in the third, and homered in the fifth. Richard Bland opened up scoring in the first inning, when Martinez double on a 2-0 count, scoring one run. Richard Bland scored five runs in the third inning. The offensive firepower was led by Jahaira Medrano, Lily Curtis, and Martinez, all driving in runs in the frame. Richard Bland tallied three home runs in the night cap. Curtis went for the long ball in the second inning. Martinez put one out in the fifth inning. Medrano had a homer in the third inning. Richard Bland racked up 17 hits. Erin Miles pitched Richard Bland to victory. The righthander surrendered zero runs on one hit over three innings, striking out two and walking one. Maggie Linthicum threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

 

Richard Bland softball next travels to Paul D. Camp Community College on Tuesday, May 3rd for a doubleheader beginning at 4:30pm.
