Statesmen Sweep Paul D. Camp on Multiple Hit Performance by Taggart

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Softball team moves to 9-13 overall, 7-12 in conference play after hosting Paul D. Camp Community College in a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.

 

In game one, Richard Bland defeated the Hurricanes on a multiple hit performance by Jessica Taggart. Taggart collected three hits in four at bats, as the Statesmen defeated Paul D. Camp, 13-8 in the opening game. Taggart doubled in the fifth inning, doubled in the fourth inning, and singled in the sixth inning. Richard Bland rallied for the victory despite trailing 2-7 in the fourth. Paul D. Camp got on the board in the top of the third after the Hurricanes scored on a wild pitch and a home run, each scoring one. The Statesmen scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ashley Beamon singled, scoring one run, Taggart doubled, scoring two runs, Sara Graham doubled, scoring one run, and Brookelynne Winterson doubled, scoring one run. Camp took the lead in the top of the sixth, but the Statesmen flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs on five hits to take a 13-8 lead. Richard Bland tallied 15 hits in the game. Taylor Green began the game for the Statesmen. The right-handed pitcher surrendered six hits and five runs over three and one-third innings, striking out three and walking two. Elexyona Moore earned the win for Richard Bland. The reliever allowed two hits and one run over three innings, striking out two and walking two.

 

In game two, Richard Bland bested Paul D. Camp 6-5 in the nightcap. The Hurricanes were the first to get on the board in the first inning on a solo home run. Richard Bland made the score 3-1 in the bottom of the third after Shelby Godfrey singled, scoring two runs, and Jessica Taggart doubled, scoring one run. Brookelynne Winterson hit a solo inside the park home run in the bottom of the fourth for the Statesmen. Taggart provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led the Statesmen with two runs batted in. Elexyona Moore earned the win for Richard Bland. The starter surrendered 11 hits and five runs over six and one-third innings, striking out three and walking one. Taylor Green appeared in relief for the Statesmen.

 

The Richard Bland College softball team next travels to Wake Technical Community College on Saturday, April 13th and Sunday, April 14th. Game one is now scheduled for 3pm on Saturday, while games two and three on Sunday beginning at 12pm.
