Women’s Hoops Picks Up Two Conference Wins on the Road

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Women's Basketball team moves to 12-5 overall, 12-5 in conference play after traveling to Catawba valley Community College Sunday afternoon, and Cleveland Community College Monday afternoon.

 

On Sunday, Richard Bland jumped out to an early 20-17 lead after 10 minutes of play. The Red Hawks outscored the Statesmen by two in the second quarter for a one point, 29-28 Statesmen lead at the break. The Statesmen came out hot in the third quarter scoring 22 points and an additional 16 in the final frame to defeat the Red Hawks 67-62 on the road.

 

Three Statesmen had double-digit figures in the win led by Kennedee Matthews and Cierra McGinlay with 18 points each. Matthews also added nine rebounds, six assists, and one steal, while McGinlay added seven rebounds and one steal. Amari Hunter chipped in with 12 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Khamaya Earley, Mercedes Gaither, and Nyomi Ndango scored four points each, and Natayvia Lipscomb and Alicia Powers two each in the win.

 

Richard Bland shot 66.7% from the charity stripe, 46.4% from the field, and 35.3% from the perimeter.

 

On Monday, Richard Bland tallied 14 in the first period, 16 in the second and third periods, and exploded for 28 points in the final period to earn a 74-54 conference win over the Jaguars. Amari Hunter led the way with 18 points, seven steals, five rebounds, and three assists. Kennedee Matthews added 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block. Off the bench, Earley tallied 11 points and five rebounds. Chamara Martin and McGinlay scored eight points each and grabbed six and two boards respectively. Nyomi Ndango went 1-3 from the field and 3-4 at the charity stripe for five points, while Mercedes Gaither went 2-3 from the field adding four points in the win.

 

The Richard Bland College women's basketball team next hosts the Jaguars of Johnston Community College on Thursday, February 15th at 5pm.
