Turnovers Prove Costly in Women’s Basketball Conference Losses

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Women's Basketball team hosted the Sea Devils of Cape Fear Community College Wednesday evening, and traveled to Southwest Virginia Community College Friday afternoon in a makeup game. After completion of the conference contests, the Statesmen moved to 3-8 overall, 3-5 in conference play.
On Wednesday, Richard Bland got off to a slow start, allowing the Sea Devils to go ahead 6-20 after one period of play. The Statesmen went on to score 18 in the second, and trailed 24-45 at the break. Cape Fear scored 26 points, and matched the Statesmen at 16 in the fourth, to coast to a 50-87 victory in Statesman Hall.
Khamaya Earley led the way for Richard Bland with her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 boards. Aryauna Brent added 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Ni'Ana Hill chipped in with her fourth double-double of the season, adding 12 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Keimare Gray was credited with seven boards and six points, while Ma'Liyah Hodges had five points. Ava Meanor added three boards in the loss.
Richard Bland shot 23.7% from the field, 10.5% from the perimeter, and 44.4% from the charity stripe.
On Friday, the Flying Eagles came out of the gate hot, scoring 24 points after 10 minutes of play. Southwest Virginia hit a three pointer to open the game. They then earned a steal and went up 0-5 on a fast break layup. The Flying Eagles added another three pointer to lead 0-8 through two minutes of play. They made a layup and were fouled, scoring the three-point play to go on a 10-point run through3 minutes. Ni'Ana Hill scored the first bucket for the Statesmen with a jumper inside the three-point line, with Southwest answering with a jumper of their own. Aryauna Brent hit a three in transition, and Hill added another two points to provide offensive momentum. Richard Bland came within 10 by the half, trailing 31-41. The Statesmen scored 12 in the third, and 11 in the fourth, dropping the road match 54-73.
Aryauna Brent led with 18 points, three steal, two rebounds, and one assist. Khamaya Earley and Ni'Ana Hill had their fourth and fifth double-doubles of the season, Earley with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Hil with 16 rebounds and 13 points. Ma'Liyah Hodges added six points, three steals, and two rebounds, while Ava Meanor had three rebounds and two points. Off the bench, Mya Mewborn had one point, one rebound, one assist, and one steal, and Keimare Gray had five rebounds, one assist, and one block.
Richard Bland shot 27.0% from the field, 22.7% from the perimeter, and 64.3% from the charity stripe.
The Richard Bland College Women's Basketball team next closes out the fall semester on the road on Wednesday, December 18th at Bryant & Stratton College (VA). Tip-off is set for 6pm.
