SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Women's Basketball team hosted two conference opponents over the weekend. The Statesmen hosted the Trojans of Fayetteville Technical Community College Friday evening, and the Eagles of Wake Technical Community College Sunday afternoon. After completion of the conference contests, the Statesmen moved to 5-11 overall, 5-8 in conference play.
Friday evening, the Statesmen jumped out to an early 17-12 lead after 10 minutes of play. In the second quarter, the Trojans made up for their slow start, outscoring the Statesmen by five, to bring the game to a 30-30 tie after two quarters of play. The Trojans exploded in the third period, scoring 23 points and outscored the Statesmen by one in the final quarter, to take home the 60-72 victory.
DaNiya McClure led the way for Richard Bland with 21 points off the bench, seven boards, and two assists. Ni'Ana Hill chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block. Khamaya Earley scored her seventh double-double of the season with 11 boards, 10 points, and one block. Aryauna Brent added nine points, Ma'Liyah Hodges six, Keimare Gray two, and Ava Meanor 1 rebound in the loss.
Richard Bland shot 35.3% from the field, 11.8% from the perimeter, and 76.9% from the charity stripe.
Sunday afternoon, Richard Bland rebounded from Friday's loss, with an 11-point, 61-50 win over the Eagles. Despite trailing 13-18 early on in the game, Richard Bland scored 20 points in the second quarter, igniting the Statesmen tempo for the remainder of the game. Coming out of halftime, the Statesmen added 15 points, and allowed only two points scored again them through the third quarter. Although Wake Tech outscored Richard Bland in the final quarter, the Statesmen cruised to victory.
Aryauna Brent led all scorers with 26 points. Brent also added four rebounds, four steals, and one assist. DaNiya McClure came off the bench to score 20 points, grab seven rebounds, three steals, two assists, and one block. Ni'Ana Hill chipped in with seven points, Hodges four, and Earley and Gray with two apiece.
Richard Bland shot 31.3% from the field, 31.3% from the perimeter, and 70.0% from the charity stripe.
The Richard Bland College Women's Basketball team next hosts Brunswick Community College on Sunday, February 2nd in a 1pm conference clash.
