Volleyball Goes 1-1 for First Day of Season

By Bryant Marks
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA - Richard Bland College of William & Mary Women's Volleyball moves to 1-1 in their first two matches of the 2019 season.

Richard Bland next plays Saturday, August 31, in a doubleheader against Pitt Community College at 1 pm and 3:30 pm, home at Statesmen Hall.

The Statesmen defeated Sandhills Community College after dropping the first set, 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-9, 25-21).  RBC climbed their way back from the deficit to win their first match of the season against their regional opponent.  The passing for the Statesmen picked up after the first set and they pulled out a close victory in the second set after a late run.  They then went on to completely control the third set, including a long string of serves from Sierra Spade, and won 25-9.  Sandhills came back strong during the fourth set, forcing a close game late, but was ultimately not enough to overcome the Statesmen.

RBC was led by their two strong outside hitters, Emma Lazerson and Tabatha Green, who combined for 31 kills in the match.  Anna Ney also was key in feeding their hot hands, adding in 31 assists.  As a team the Statesmen had 48 kills, 10 blocks, and 34 digs in this match.

The second game of the day for the Statesmen matched them up against Montgomery College, who had earlier defeated Sandhills Community College.  This match was the first matchup ever for the two programs, with Montgomery defeating the Statesmen 3-0 (20-25, 17-25, 24-26).  RBC started the match out of rhythm but would soon find it to close the match out strong.  They fell just short in the first and second set though, losing 20-25 and 17-25.  In the third set, the team came out firing, jumping out to a sizable lead at the start.  The Statesmen were up 23-19, only needing two more points to extend the match, but would be outdone by a comeback from Montgomery with the final score being 24-26.

Bland was led by their two pin hitters in this match, Lazerson (9 kills, 4 blocks, 7 digs) and Green (10 kills, 4 digs).
