Big Conference Victory for Women's Volleyball

By Bryant Marks
SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA -- Richard Bland College of William & Mary's Women's Volleyball team entered their first conference match today and emerged atop of the conference after their big win against conference foe, Spartanburg Methodist.

Now, 5-6, the Statesmen will look to tomorrow, Saturday, September 21, to get back to .500 ball and then get over that hump with a doubleheader against Southwest Virginia Community College in Statesmen Hall at 2 pm and 4 pm.

The Statesmen came into this game ready to play, using their recent road trips to Florida and North Carolina as learning tools to better themselves for this moment.  Opening up the match, the Statesmen set the tone early with big hits from their front-row players and would win the set 25-21.  The second set saw more life from Spartanburg as they would edge out the Statesmen for the set and look to take that momentum gained into the rest of the game.  RBC was not about to sit back and let that happen a second time.  Again, they overpowered the Spartanburg defense with their offense in the third set, winning 25-21.  The fourth set saw a back and forth match where the Statesmen took over near the end to seal the victory in front of the home crowd.  The final score was 3-1, Richard Bland.

Outside hitters, Emma Lazerson and Ayanna Swan, each put away 22 kills for the home team while also adding in 5 aces and 7 digs, and 1 ace and 3 digs, respectively.  Anna Ney, as in previous matches, was the deliverer of the sets tonight.  She totaled 41 assists and 3 aces for the match.
