RICHARD BLAND ATHLETICS TAKES PART IN WOODLAWN MOVIE SCREENING

PETERSBURG, Va., (Nov. 9, 2015) -- On October 29, the James River District of the United Methodist Church hosted several hundred students and adults at a showing of the Erwin Brothers’ film, Woodlawn, at Regal Southpark in Colonial Heights.

Following a successful set of advance screenings to the football teams at the University of Alabama, University of South Carolina, University of Georgia, Ole Miss, and Temple University, the film is currently playing in theaters across the country. The audience that night included student athletes and staff representing basketball, golf, soccer, softball and track and field from Richard Bland College along with student-athletes from Virginia State University and members of the Prince George High School football team.

The film tells the true story of Hank Erwin (Sean Astin), whose faith impacts the Woodlawn High School football team, especially future NFL running back Tony Nathan (Caleb Castille). Erwin, Nathan, and Coach Tandy Geralds (Nic Bishop) help the team, the school, and their community overcome the adversity they are facing in the midst of this racially-divided time in the nation's history, and unite to form a powerful team with love as their motivation.

Reverend Jacob Sahms, a local UM pastor and an adjunct at RBC, said, "The film is powerful, but it's real-life implications for our community make this a must-see for everyone. We're so excited that Richard Bland Athletics could be a major part of this community event. Many thanks to Director of Athletics Chuck Moore for organizing the players and coaches!"
