Tierney begins his first season as Head Coach, third overall at Richard Bland, for the 2023-24 year.

The Richard Bland College Athletics Department is pleased to announce that Ryan Tierney has been promoted to the Head Baseball Coach position, effective immediately.

Tierney assumes all leadership responsibility for the baseball program from John Fletcher, who led the program in its first two seasons.

In his first-year as Pitching/Assistant Coach in the 2021-22 school year, Tierney helped the Statesmen to a 12-30 record, 10-28 in conference play. Prior to his second year, he was promoted to Associate Head Coach/Pitching Coach. Tierney help the Statesmen to a 7-34 overall record, 7-25 in conference play in year two. “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to lead the baseball program at a school that offers such unique and incredible value to its students,” says Tierney. “Our first two years were about building a foundation. With that foundation set, now it’s time to shift our focus to becoming a source of pride for the school and the community.”

Prior to joining the Richard Bland College of William and Mary coaching staff, Tierney was the Pitching Coach at Eastern Mennonite University. In his four seasons at EMU, Coach Tierney also served as the outfield coach prior to being named the pitching coach. Heading into the 2019 campaign, Tierney was named the Running Game Coordinator where the EMU set a program record for stolen bases in a season with 69. Tierney also brings with him two seasons of coaching experience in the Valley Baseball League where he spent two summers. In his time with the Harrisonburg Turks and Front Royal Cardinals, Tierney coached seven players who were selected in the MLB Draft.

“We want to create a student-athlete experience that cannot be matched anywhere else. Our number one priority will be to create an environment where our student-athletes are taught to fall in love with the process of relentless pursuit in bettering themselves. Whether that be as a baseball player, a student, or a friend. We want to inspire and assist our guys to be their very best in all aspects,” says Tierney.

Tierney received his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Mennonite University in 2016. As a student-athlete for EMU from 2012-2016, Tierney owned a 3-2 career record in 25 appearances, with 51.2 innings pitched.

Under Tierney’s leadership, Assistant Coach Dylan Stowell will transition into the team’s Recruiting Coordinator, while Tyler Campbell will also remain on staff as an Assistant Coach.
