STATESMAN CLIP HAWKS IN RETURN TO NJCAA

Petersburg, VA, November 2, 2013- The Richard Bland Statesman got out to a commanding lead halfway through the first half and never looked back, out scoring their opponent 112-69 in Statesman Hall. The Statesman had a total of five players in double figures, while all active players logged minutes on the floor.

In the first half, the Statesmen jumped out to a 29-19 lead midway through the half, going into half-time with a 51-29 lead. The Statesmen scorched the nets shooting a sizzling 69% from the floor, as the opponents followed shooting at 55%. The Statesmen struggled early with the Hawks' dribble penetration as they scored several lay ups and advanced to the line drawing foul shot opportunities.

During the second half, the Statesmen continued to pile on the points adding 61 second half points against the Hawks. The Statesmen were led in scoring by Micah Thomas who poured in 22 points including 5-8 from three-point range. Tavon Mealy led the front court in scoring with his 21 point 12 rebound effort for the Statesmen. The other double figure scorers were Avery Ugba with 12 points, Evan Bates tossed in two treys to add to his 12 point total and Melvin Gregory scored 11 points to round out the scoring for the Statesmen. The College of Southern Maryland were led in scoring by Steven Cole who had 15 points and three steals and Juwan Cole added 14 points for the Hawks.

The Statesmen will be in action on the road next week against Cape Fear Community College on Friday, November 8, 2013 at 7:00 pm, and Brunswick Community College the following day Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 1:00 pm.
