STATESMEN CAPTURE FIRST ANNUAL MARK BRYAN TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP

Petersburg, VA, November 24, 2013-Tavon Mealy matched last nights scoring effort with 23 points to lead Richard Bland College (7-0) over Montgomery College by the score of 116-94. The Statesmen continues their winning streak to seven games in a row.

The Statesmen jumped out to a 15-5 lead early in the first half, enroute to extending their lead to 57-34 at the intermission. Richard Bland continued their offensive execution into the second half, leading by as many as 23 points. Montgomery College closed the lead to 11, (89-78) with 8:31 remaining only to allow the Statesmen to open up the lead and close out the game. Micah Thomas came up with 21 points nailing five of his seven three point field goal attempts. Melvin Gregory had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and frontcourt mate Avery Ugba chipped in with 19 points and grabbed 13 boards to his credit. Reserve point guard Trayvonte Brown tossed in 12 points and dished out seven assists and pulled down five rebounds.

The Raptors were led by D'Angelo Vaughn and Timothy Christian who had 20 and 19 points respectively. Andre Gaines and Shaun Lee-Pender both contributed 14 points apiece for the visitors. The Statesmen are back in action after the Thanksgiving break on December 4, 2013 at home against conference foe Pitt Community College, the scheduled tip off is for 6 pm.
