BASKETBALL HEADS TO WALTERS STATE C.C. FOR FRIDAY EVENING GAME

PETERSBURG, Va., (Jan. 6, 2015) – After a 20-day break for the holidays, it will be back to business for the Richard Bland College men's basketball team, which travels to Division I Walters (TN) State Community College for a 7 p.m. non-conference game on Friday, Jan. 8.

Richard Bland (8-6, 3-2 Region X) is coming off three consecutive wins to close out the first half of the season, most recently a 69-66 victory over a pesky CCBC Catonsville team on Dec. 15.

LAST SEASON VS. WALTERS STATE: First meeting between the two schools.
 

SECOND SEMESTER ADDITIONS: The Statesmen welcome two sophomore additions, both Richmond natives, to the lineup for the second half of the season. The first is 6-6 guard Reginald Moses, who averaged 13 points in 19 minutes as a member of last year's National Championship team … The second is 6-0 guard Gerard Dean-McBride who played at Virginia Union two seasons ago.

 

ROAD TESTED: The Statesmen will be playing their tenth road contest of the season on Friday.

SOPHOMORE LEADERSHIP: Sophomore captain Troy Gibson leads the team in scoring (14.0 ppg), rebounding (6.7 rpg) and minutes played (27.3 mpg) … He has played and started in all 14 games, scoring in double figures in 11 contests.
 

FRONTCOURT SUPPORT: Gibson has been aided by the play of fellow sophomore Devin Smith in the frontcourt … Smith ranks second on the team in scoring (13.1 ppg) and is averaging 23.4 minutes a game since joining the lineup five games into the season … Smith notched a career-best 24 points against Pitt C.C. on Dec. 2.

FOUR IN DOUBLE FIGURES: Along with Gibson and Smith, two other Statesmen average in double figures – freshmen guards Gevon Arrington (10.7 ppg) and Deandre Clark (10.4 ppg).
 

SOLID SHOOTING: In nine of the 14 games this season, Richard Bland has shot 45 percent or better from the field … That mark includes a season-best 55.9 percent against CCBC Dundalk  on Nov. 1

SOLID REBOUNDING: In nine of the 14 games this season, Richard Bland has grabbed for or 40 rebounds.

 

REBOUNDING AS A TEAM: Against Lenoir Community College on Nov. 18, the Statesmen hauled in 61 rebounds, tying a mark of 61 set against Cape Fear Community College last January 7 … Only one other time in Moore's time as coach has the team had 60 or more rebounds in a game – 60 versus Tidewater Community College on Dec. 13, 2013.

 
ABOUT THE SENATORS: Walters State is in the midst of a five-game winning streak, having defeated Maryville College JV on Wednesday evening, 88-63, improving to 12-4 … The Senators are led in scoring by Denzel Smith (13.6 ppg) … Ricky Dunaway leads the Senators in rebounding (4.9 rpg) … The team is averaging 90.9 ppg …
 

WHAT'S NEXT: The Statesmen return home on Jan. 13 to face Region X Conference opponent Louisburg College at 7 p.m. … The contest is the RBC All-Campus Blackout Game, a cookout at 6 pm., free T-shirts, halftime prizes and more … Walters State next hosts Spartanburg Methodist on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
