STATESMEN RETURN HOME WEDNESDAY IN REMATCH AGAINST PITT C.C.

PETERSBURG, Va., (Jan. 19, 2016) – The last time Richard Bland and Pitt C.C. played each another, the teams scored a combined 187 points and the host Bulldogs came away with a narrow 94-93 victory. The Statesmen look to reverse that outcome and protect their strong 5-1 home record when hosting Pitt on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 7:00 p.m.

Richard Bland (8-9, 4-3) is coming off playing its 11th road game of the season on Saturday, a tightly-contested 85-76 loss against Division I Cape Fear Community College. The Statesmen battled back from an 11-point halftime deficit to come within two points on two occasions, but weren't able to crack the Sea Devils down the stretch.

LAST OUTING VS. PITT: Played on Dec. 2 at Pitt … Sophomore Devin Smith canned a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it left the Statesmen one-point shy of forcing overtime in a 94-93 loss … In a sea-saw game, Pitt C.C. was able to knot the contest at 51-51 with 15:40 to play and then went on a mini 7-0 spurt to increase its lead to 58-51 … With four minutes remaining the Bulldogs built a 77-66 margin, too large a deficit for Richard Bland to completely shave down despite Smith's last second 3-pointer… Smith notched a career-high 24 points for Richard Bland ... HOME SWEET HOME: The Statesmen are 5-1 at home, the lone blemish coming against No. 10 nationally-ranked Louisburg last Wednesday … Richard Bland averages 193 fans per game, 4th best in the nation.
 
NON-CONFERENCE GAMES: In RBC's six home and seven away games, the cumulative statistics are similar in most categories except for rebounding and points scored, where the Statesmen average more points (82.0 ppg) and grab more rebounds (50.2 rpg) in away contest than at home.
 

OFF THE BENCH: For the second consecutive game freshman guard Jordan Griggs led the Statesmen in scoring, tallying 20 against Cape Fear on Saturday, following up his 17-point outing against No. 10 Louisburg the previous Wednesday … It was Griggs' seventh double figures scoring effort of the season … He scored a career-high 25 points in an 84-82 victory over Essex County College on Nov. 6.

FOUR IN DOUBLE FIGURES: Four players who began the 2015-16 season average in double figures … Sophomore Troy Gibson leads the team (13.9 ppg), followed by sophomore Devin Smith (12.0) and freshman guards Jordan Griggs (10.4) and Gevon Arrington (10.1).  

SOPHOMORE LEADERSHIP: Gibson, the lone returner from last year's National Championship team, tallied 12 points against Cape Fear, the 14th time scoring he's scored in double figures this season … In his consistent sophomore season, Gibson has registered four games with double figures in rebounding and has four double-doubles this season.

SECOND SEMESTER ADDITIONS: The Statesmen welcomed two sophomore additions, both Richmond natives, to the lineup for the second half of the season ... The first is 6-6 guard Reginald Moses, who averaged 13 points in 19 minutes as a member of last year's National Championship team … The second is 6-0 guard Gerard Dean-McBride who played at Virginia Union two seasons ago … In his debut game against Walters State, Dean-McBride led RBC in scoring with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field … Dean-McBride followed that outing with 16 points against Cape Fear. 
 

STRONG REBOUNDERS: Against Lenoir Community College on Nov. 18, the Statesmen hauled in 61 rebounds, tying a mark of 61 set against Cape Fear Community College last January 7 … Only one other time in Moore's time as coach has the team had 60 or more rebounds in a game – 60 versus Tidewater Community College on Dec. 13, 2013.

NATIONAL RANKING: When playing No. 10 Louisburg last Wednesday, the Statesmen were playing the first of three games against nationally-ranked Division II teams … In the latest NJCAA Division II poll, Patrick Henry is ranked No. 15 and Bryant & Stratton was among five teams receiving votes for a national ranking … On the Division I side, the Statesmen have played two ranked opponents, Northwest Florida State College and Harcum College.
 
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS: Pitt is coming off a narrow 77-76 loss to No. 13 nationally-ranked Patrick Henry on Saturday … The loss followed a 99-61 victory over Guilford Tech … The team is led in scoring by sophomore guard Alfonso Josey (14.0 ppg) and in rebounding by freshman forward Rashawn Edwards (10.4 rpg) … A number of high scoring games this season have the Bulldogs averaging 91.7 points a gam, which is 10th best in the nation … The team shoots 47.6 percent from the field.
 

WHAT'S NEXT: The Statesmen will remain home for a Saturday contest against Lenoir Community College at 3:00 p.m. … The Statesmen will be honoring new Hall of Famers Ron Harris and John Thomas, both Class of 1980, on Hall of Fame/Alumni Day on campus … Pitt next hosts Vance-Granville on Monday, Jan. 25 at 7:00 p.m.
