Southerland Named All-Region X First Team

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE – Richard Bland College sophomore forward Kenny Southerland, who finished the regular season as the fourth leading scorer and third-leading rebounder among Region 10 players, was named to the conference's First-Team, as announced on Wednesday. Southerland becomes the sixth player in program history to earn such accolades.

The 6-foot-7 Southerland, who was among six players named to the Region 10 First Team, averaged 19.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game in 24 contests for the Statesmen, both team bests. He led RBC in field goal percentage, shooting 60 percent from the field, 10th best in Region 10. His 2.1 blocks per game ranked sixth in the region. In 10 conference games, Southerland averaged 21.6 ppg and 11.1 rpg.

Behind Southerland's stellar sophomore season, the Statesmen finished the regular season 14-14, 5-7, and secured the No. 5 seed in the Region X Championships. RBC will face No. 4 seed Brunswick Community College (22-8, 7-5) on Thursday, March 5 at 5 pm at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, NC. Brunswick features two players, forward Silas Love and guard Jeremiah Pope who were also named the Region 10 First Team.

"All-Region First Team recognition attests to the outstanding season Kenny had leading our program," says first-year head coach Andrew Lacey. "Kenny was our go-to player throughout the season, and more than held his own against many of the top big men in NJCAA Division I."

Southerland scored in double figures in 23 of 24 games in 2019-20. He scored a career-high 41 points at Brunswick on January 15 and had two 30-point outings. He tallied 31 points against nationally-ranked Harcum College on November 8 and poured in 30 points against Howard Community College on February 11. On the season, Southerland tallied 20 or more points 11 times, including eight of the season's final 10 games when RBC was making its late season run.

Southerland showed his rebounding prowess throughout the season, securing a career-best 16 against CCBC Catonsville on December 10. He reached double figures in rebounding 12 times and grabbed 15 against Brunswick in the same game he scored 41 points.

Southerland is a graduate of Varina H.S. where he played for coach Lacey, captured a conference championship and made an appearance in the state tournament quarterfinals.
