DEITRICH TAPS HOME GAME WINNER IN 2-1 VICTORY OVER JOHNSON & WALES

PETERSBURG, Va., (Oct. 4, 2015) – Freshman forward Bryce Deitrich (Farmville, VA/Prince Edward) scored an unassisted goal at the 87th minute off a deflected shot, to lead the Richard Bland College men's soccer team to a 2-1 comeback victory over Charlotte, N.C.-based Johnson & Wales at a soggy Statesmen Field on Sunday afternoon.

Richard Bland's win resulted in the first loss of the season for Johnson & Wales. The Wildcats were 7-0 heading into Sunday's game.

Deitrich was at the right place at the right time, scoring his third goal of the season stemming from deflected shot off the Johnson & Wales goalie that was taken by freshman center Jeffrey Pineda (Los Angeles, CA/Lake Braddock Secondary School). His goal snapped a two-game losing skid for the Statesmen in a game played in a steady mist and wind.

With the victory, Richard Bland improves to 8-4-1. Johnson & Wales drops to 7-1. The Statesmen resume Region X competition next Saturday, Oct. 10 with a road contest at the University of South Carolina Salkenhatchie at 4:00 p.m. Johnson & Wales next faces Mid-Atlantic Christian on Oct. 10 at 3:30 p.m.

The visiting Wildcats scored first, getting the game's first goal just 8:43 into play when freshman midfielder Jonathan Arellano capitalized on a failed clear. The Statesmen would tie the contest 1-1 at the 31:58 mark when sophomore center Eduardo Quintanilla (San Salvador, El Salvador/Stonewall Jackson) his tapped in his fifth goal of the season when a ball ricocheted off the back of a JWU defender and onto his feet for a fortuitous goal.

Freshman Ciro Labrada (Guanajuto, Mexico/Stonewall Jackson) shined in nets for the Statesmen, making six saves in the contest.

"Ciro played very well in goal for us and made a couple big saves for us that helped a lot in the win," said head coach Eduard de Souza. "We played well today, but we still have a lot of things to work on because we play next Saturday and Sunday on the road in the conference. At this time of season, every conference game is not only tough, but important for the playoffs."
