Richard Bland Welcomes Wake Tech (N.C.) Thursday At 3 p.m.

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College will play its official home-opening men's soccer match against Wake Technical (N.C.) Community College in Region X action on Thursday afternoon, August 31, at 3 p.m. on the recently renovated Statesman Soccer Field.  It's the first of four-straight home contests for the host Statesmen (1-0, 1-0 Region X) versus the visiting Eagles (1-1, 1-1 Region X).

Scouting the Statesmen
Richard Bland is 1-0 overall, including 1-0 in Region X, following a 4-0 season-opening shutout victory past USC Lancaster on August 24 at Ukrop Park.  The Statesmen are coached by fourth-year head coach Eduardo de Souza, and assisted by second-year assistant coach Nick Surkamp.  Sophomores Dusan Stankovic/Belgrade, Serbia and Hussein Osman/Charlottesville, along with freshmen Davi Girardi/São Paulo, Brazil and Romeo Kayizali/Kigali, Rwanda, each scored goals against the Lancers.  Freshman Ervin Ikanovic/Tuzla, Bosnia & Herzegovina contributed two assists, while sophomore Jamie McAvoy/Ayr, Scotland and freshman Umar Mujahid/Meherrin, each had one assist, while sophomore keeper Tomás Fonseca/Torres Vedras, Portugal started in front of the net and played the entire 90 minutes to earn credit for the first shutout of the season.

Series History
Richard Bland leads the all-time series between the two schools in the sport of men's soccer, 5-3, including four consecutive wins.  The Statesmen defeated Wake Tech 3-2 last season at home on August 25 and 2-0 last September 22 in North Carolina.  Sophomore Danny Torres/Bucaramanga, Colombia had a goal during the road match last fall, while classmate Finn Busse/Kiel, Germany contributed an assist at Wake Tech.

2016 NJCAA Region X Tournament Champions
Richard Bland completed 2016 with the finest season in the four-year history of the program, posting a final overall record of 12-7-2, including its first-ever Region X Tournament Championship and advancing to the NJCAA Division I Southeast District Tournament semifinals.
