SOFTBALL LATE HITS SWEEPS SOUTHEASTERN CC-WHITEVILLE

PETERSBURG, Va. – The Richard Bland softball team found two ways to win in sweeping Southeastern Community College of Whiteville by contrasting scores of 5-4 (7 innings) and 9-3 at the Statesmen Softball Field Friday afternoon.

RBC combined for a total of 17 hits on the day, 14 runs and 12 RBI's, the wins improve the Statesmen to 7-6 on the season and 4-0 in the league, while the Lady Rams drop to 4-8 overall and 2-2 in Region X play.

In the opening contest, both teams went scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Statesmen grabbed the early lead, 3-0 after Amanda Archer (Amelia County) tripled to centerfield to bring home Kim Ellis (L.C. Bird) and Hannah Barnes (Emporia, VA).

However, the Lady Rams would make a run of its own in the fifth inning to tie the game at four even.

A sacrifice fly by Kristin Saunders (New Kent) would send Whitney Clements home to win the ball game, 5-4 over Southeastern CC of Whiteville.

Tara Heatwole (Jamestown) got the win for the Statesmen thanks to nine strikeouts. She allowed no earned runs on six hits and one walk over seven innings.

In game two, the Statesmen got off to a great start with six runs in the first three innings after a sacrifice fly by Haley Olson (Hermitage) and a three-run home run by Barnes.

The Lady Rams would not give up as they scored two runs of its own in the third but the Statesmen left no doubt about the eventual outcome when Haley Boykins (Southampton) who has been clutch for RBC in the past two games pinched hit to spark the Statesmen offensively and lead to runs at the bottom of the sixth to seal the 9-3 victory.

Richard Bland will return to action on Saturday, March 14 when they travel to Wake Tech for a Region X doubleheader. The first pitch is slated for 12 noon.
