OFFENSE POWERS SOFTBALL TO SWEEP OVER COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND

LEONARDTOWN, Md. – The No. 11 Richard Bland College softball team picked up two wins on Sunday afternoon against the College of Southern Maryland. The Statesmen topped the Lady Hawks 9-0 in the opening contest and came out on top of a 12-4 slugfest in the nightcap.
Richard Bland improves to 27-10 on the year with the wins, having won their last four straight games while Southern Maryland drops to 5-17 with the two setbacks.
The Statesmen tallied 28 hits, 21 runs and 19 RBI in the two-game sweep.
In the first game, the Statesmen picked up an early 1-0 lead after Hayley Olson (Richmond, VA) RBI before a five-run explosion in the second inning that lifted RBC to a 9-0 win in five innings. Erin Forbes (Camden, NC) led the way as she went 2-for-4 from the plate, driving in one, scoring two runs and one RBI.
Kristin Saunders (New Kent, VA) kept the Lady Hawks off the scoreboard for all five innings she was in the circle. Saunders allowed no opposing players to cross the plate on three hits while ringing up three.
Despite the Statesmen 2-0 lead in the second game, CSM answered with three runs of its own in the first inning. The Lady Hawks would build a 4-2 lead over two innings before the Statesmen scored two runs in the fourth.
From there Richard Bland managed to grab the lead after a strong fifth inning. The Statesmen were able to score five runs in the inning, a steal from Olson extended the lead and gave the Statesmen the lead for good as CSM was never able to recover.
Saunders recorded the win for RBC, she pitched 3 2/3 shutout innings. She struck out three, walked two and surrendered two hits.
Richard Bland will return to action on April 25 when they travel to Patrick Henry Community College for a Region X doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
