SOFTBALL ON LOSING END IN THREE TOUGH GAMES AT JUCO KICKOFF CLASSIC

CLEARWATER, FL. (Jan. 30, 2016) — On the second day of play at the JUCO Kickoff Classic, the Richard Bland softball team ran into a trio of top flight Division I programs, falling to the College of Central Florida 9-1, St. Johns River State College 6-5 and Hillsborough Community College, 9-1.

The Statesmen (0-6) have one final day of competition remaining at the JUCO Kickoff Classic, facing Chipola College on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.

College of Central Florida 9, Richard Bland 1
The nightcap of a long day of action for the Statesmen saw the contest tied 1-1 against a strong College of Central Florida team heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman Maddison Waycaster singled to center, driving home Whitney Clements to even the score in the top of the fourth. But in the bottom of the fourth, the Patriots plated five runs and tacked on three more runs in the fifth to build a 9-1 lead. Freshman Shannon Buffington was the pitcher of record for RBC.

St Johns River State College 6, Richard Bland 5
In the most competitively played game of the day, the Statesmen suffered a hard-fought 6-5 loss to St Johns River State College. The Vikings, who saw Richard Bland tie the game 5-5 by plating two runs in the top of the seventh, scored the game winner in the bottom of the seventh when a Jordan Phillips single to right field brought home Alandra Resendes.

Richard Bland took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. A single by freshman August Ringer brought home Morgan Whitley, followed by a two run single by Mackenzie Babb that plated Hayley Olson and Ringer. The Vikings got a run back in the bottom of the second, but with the bases loaded Buffington snuffed out the rally by inducing a popup third out to second base.

St. Johns River State College scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth off Buffington and a single run off freshman Tabby Dabney to build a 5-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh. But the Statesmen had their most clutch inning of the game, getting a single by Whitney Clements that brought home Babb. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch enabled sophomore Hannah Barnes to scamper home and tie the game 5-5.  Mallory Lowe got the win in relief for St. Johns River State College, pitching five innings and allowing two runs. Buffington suffered the loss for RBC after she was inserted back on the mound in the seventh.

Hillsborough Community College 9, Richard Bland 1
In Saturday's opener, Richard Bland could muster only three hits against Hillsborough Community College pitching. Hawks pitcher Aubrey Ehlers allowed one run over five innings, striking out nine en route to the victory. HCC scored four runs in the first inning, capped by a three-run homer by Kayla Bruno and tacked on two insurance runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

RBC scored its lone run in the bottom of the first following a walk to Olson, which brought home Barnes. Katelyn Cobb took the loss for RIchard Bland College. She allowed seven runs in five innings.
