SOFTBALL HEADS TO WAKE TECH FOR TUESDAY DOUBLEHEADER

PETERSBURG, Va., (Mar. 28, 2016) – Fresh off a pair of 3-2 victories over Patrick Henry Community College on Saturday, the Richard Bland College softball team hits the road for a Region X Conference doubleheader against Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, N.C., on Tuesday starting at 2 p.m.

The Statesmen (10-14, 6-2) currently sit in second place in Region X Conference standings behind Florence-Darlington (4-0).

ABOUT WAKE TECH: The Eagles are 2-2 this season, having last played Mar. 18 at Patrick Henry, losing 20-17 and 8-6.
 

LAST OUTING VS. WAKE TECH: The Statesmen won all four games against the Eagles last year, each by convincing margins … RBC won 7-0, 15-0 on Mar. 25 and 14-2, 19-6 on April 6.

MAKING AN IMPACT: In consecutive weekends, sophomore Amanda Archer bombed home runs that led to RBC victories … This past Saturday, her two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning tied the game 2-2 against Patrick Henry Community College, which the Statesmen eventually won the bottom of the ninth, 3-2. In the second game of the doubleheader, Archer pounded a double to left field in the bottom of the second inning, leading to a 2-0 RBC lead. The Statesmen won the nightcap 3-2 … Archer went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI over the weekend and for her performance in the two-game sweep over Patrick Henry, she is the RBC Student-Athlete of the Week … For the season, Archer is hitting .281 and is second on the team in slugging percentage at .404.
 

BY THE NUMBERS: Sophomore Abby Eichelberger leads the Statesmen in hitting with a .368 average, just ahead of fellow sophomore Hannah Barnes, who is hitting .364 … Barnes leads the team in hits (28), doubles (5), triples (2), runs (20) and slugging percentage (.451).

KEEN EYE: Sophomore Whitney Clements leads the team in walks (13) and an on base percentage (.425) … On the season she has 23 hits and is tied for the team lead in RBI with 12.
 

NO ERRORS: For the second time this season, the Statesmen played a complete 7-inning game without an error in the second game victory over Patrick Henry … The first time came against College of Southern Maryland on Mar. 5.

ON THE HILL: Freshman Shannon Buffington has shouldered the pitching duties for most of the season, appearing in 20 of 24 games and starting in 14 of them … She owns nine of RBC's 10 wins this season while logging 92.2 innings on the mound … She has struck out 32 batters and sports a 3.02 ERA … Nine of her 14 starts have been complete-game efforts.
 

BATS WARMING UP: In the doubleheader against Herkimer, the Statesmen had 19 total hits, banging out ten in the nightcap … On the season, RBC has three double digit hit games and have had nine or more hits in six games.

RUN PRODUCING: The eight runs scored against Herkimer represent the second most this season, following 11 tallied against Southeastern Community College-Whiteville on Feb. 21, a game in which the team banged out a season-best 15 hits. 
 

WHAT'S NEXT: Following Tuesday's game, the Statesmen will travel to Patrick Henry for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. … Wake Tech visits Surry C.C. on Wednesday for a doubleheader.
