Richard Bland Hosting Surry (N.C.) On Saturday At Noon

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College will welcome Region 10 opponent Surry (N.C.) Community College for a softball doubleheader on Saturday, April 15 at 12 p.m. at the RBC Softball Field.  The Statesmen are 16-18 overall, 10-7 in Region 10, currently in fourth place among the seven region schools competing in the sport.  The Knights are 14-18 overall, 5-9 in Region 10, currently in fifth place.

Scouting the Statesmen
Richard Bland is 16-18 overall after sweeping a road doubleheader at Hagerstown (Md.) Community College on April 13 (9-1, 20-6).  The Statesmen are coached by head coach Katy Lampman, who is in her first season, while assisted by first-year assistant coaches Cassidy Clayton, Pete Berrios and Danielle Beverly.

Through 34 games, Richard Bland has been led offensively by sophomore Tabby Dabney/Mechanicsville, who is hitting .466 with nine home runs, one triple, 13 doubles, 37 runs, 44 RBIs and five stolen bases.  Dabney is followed by freshmen Taylor Daniel/Alberta (.422, 1 3B, 7 2Bs, 33 Rs, 12 RBIs, 3 SBs), Ashley Fritz/North Chesterfield (.413, 3 3Bs, 7 2Bs, 19Rs, 18 RBIs, 1 SB), Brooklynn Bilyard/Culpeper (.411, 5 HRs, 11 2Bs, 28 Rs, 33 RBIs, 9 SBs), Kay'Lee Justice/Suffolk (.390, 5 HRs, 2 3Bs, 13 2Bs, 31 Rs, 35 RBIs, 2 SBs) and Kara Morris/Kents Store (.361, 1 3B, 3 2Bs, 27 Rs, 9 RBIs, 5 SBs), along with sophomores Katelyn King/Chesterfield (.359, 2 HRs, 1 3B, 6 2Bs, 28 Rs, 20 RBIs, 3 SBs) and August Ringer/Yale (.316, 2 3Bs, 25 Rs, 6 RBIs, 6 SBs).  The squad is hitting .366 with 24 home runs, 11 triples, 78 doubles and 225 RBIs, while scoring 8.1 runs per game.  The totals for home runs and doubles are new program records.

The Statesmen pitching staff has been led by sophomores Shannon Buffington/Virginia Beach and Tabby Dabney, along with Brooklynn Bilyard.  Buffington is 5-9 with a 4.46 earned run average and 35 strikeouts over 75.1 innings with seven complete games in 19 appearances, including 14 starts.  Dabney is 5-6 with a 4.46 ERA, as well, and 43 strikeouts over 69.0 innings with five complete games in 17 appearances, including 12 starts.  Bilyard is 4-2 with a 4.96 ERA and 47 strikeouts over 42.1 innings with three complete games in 12 appearances, including eight starts.  The team ERA is 4.54 with 132 strikeouts over 200.1 innings.

Series History
Richard Bland and Surry are playing for the 19th and 20th times in the sport of softball, and the series is currently tied at 9-9.  The Statesmen and Knights split a doubleheader on March 18 in Dobson, North Carolina … Richard Bland winning the second game 7-1 after falling in the first game 7-6.
