Richard Bland Names Kara Morris Athlete of the Week

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College sophomore softball standout Kara Morris/Kents Store has been named the Athletics Department's Athlete of the Week for the period February 20-26.  The catcher/outfielder led the Statesmen (4-3, 1-3 Region 10) during the opening five games of the season.

Morris hit .538 (7-13) with a grand slam home run, two doubles, three runs scored, three walks and six RBIs in the five contests.  The grand slam, her first collegiate home run, led Richard Bland to a 14-11 home win against NJCAA Division I Harford (Md.) on Feb. 26, drawing two walks, as well.  She had the two doubles during a 12-3 setback at region member Florence-Darlington (S.C.) on Feb. 24, after opening the season with four hits and two RBIs during a 15-10 road win at region member Southeastern-Whiteville (N.C.) on Feb. 23.

Morris has started all seven games this season, hitting .450 (9-20) with two home runs, three doubles, six runs, three walks and 12 RBIs.  She leads the team in home runs, doubles, RBIs and slugging percentage (.900), while second on the team in batting average and on-base percentage (.520).  Morris has a .941 fielding percentage.

Please see below for a brief Q&A on her Athlete of the Week selection.  Athletes of the Week are chosen by members of the Richard Bland Athletics Department.

Q: How does it feel to be named Richard Bland Athlete of the Week?
KM: It is an honor to be named Athlete of the Week.

Q: How did you get started in your sport and how long have you played?
KM: I actually did not want to play softball at first.  My family and I were at tryouts and I locked myself in the car for about 30 minutes and argued with my dad.  I finally got out of the car and tried out, and fell in love with the game.  I was nine years old.

Q: What do you like most about your team?
KM: I like that we all get along and that we are always there for each other.

Q: Who is your funniest teammate/why?
KM: Kamryn Lanier.  She is always acting crazy and dancing.

Q: Do you have any pregame rituals/superstitions?
KM: I always listen to the same songs and pray.

Q: What is your favorite place on campus/why?
KM: The weight room in Statesman Hall and on the softball field.  Those are the places where my team and I put in work and get better.

Q: What is your favorite class/professor/why?
KM: Biology with Dr. Eric Miller, Assistant Professor.  What we learn about is very interesting.
