Richard Bland Names Ashley Fritz Athlete of the Week

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- Richard Bland College sophomore softball standout Ashley Fritz/Chesterfield has been named the Athletics Department's Athlete of the Week for the period March 27-April 2.  The outfielder/catcher led the Statesmen (16-9) to three wins in four games last week. 

Fritz hit .615 (8-13) with one home run, one triple, one double, eight runs, eight RBIs, three walks and one stolen base in the four contests.  She was 4-4 with the triple, double, five runs and six RBIs during a doubleheader sweep at Wake Tech (N.C.) on March 28, and Fritz was 4-9 with the home run, three runs and two RBIs while splitting a home doubleheader against Southeastern-Whiteville (N.C.) on March 29.

Fritz has started all 24 games she has played this season, hitting .390 (30-77) with two home runs, three triples, six doubles, 24 runs, 23 RBIs, 12 walks and six stolen bases.  She adds a .467 on-base percentage, a .623 slugging percentage and a .966 fielding percentage.

Ashley has been named to the Athletic Director's Academic Excellence List for each of her three semesters, as well, attaining an outstanding semester grade point average of 4.0 each time.  She is a Statesman Scholar honor student, and a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee.

Q: How does it feel to be named Richard Bland Athlete of the Week?
AF: It feels great.  I really appreciate all the support I've received from my coaches and the entire athletics program.

Q: How did you get started in your sport and how long have you played?
AF: I used to play baseball and eventually Kamryn (Lanier) asked me to play recreation league softball with her in elementary school.

Q: What do you like most about your team?
AF: Generally, everyone is laid back and always willing to work to get better.  As a team, we're always pushing one another to do our best.

Q: Who is your funniest teammate/why?
AF: Allison Jarrett has an interesting sense of humor.  She's always cracking jokes and being sarcastic, and I love it. 

Q: Do you have any pregame rituals/superstitions?
AF: We pray as a team before each game.  I also chew gum while I am playing.

Q: What is your favorite place on campus/why?
AF: The pecan grove and the Japanese garden because I can go to relax and take time for myself when the weather is nice.

Q: What is your favorite class/professor/why?
AF: Chemistry because it is challenging and interactive.  I take what I learn in the classroom and immediately apply it to work in the laboratory.
