Softball Goes 1-2 Against Yetis

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Softball team moves to 5-7 overall, 5-6 in conference play and after traveling to Cleveland Community College on Sunday, March 10th and Monday, March 11th.

 

In game one, both teams were strong in the circle, but the Statesmen prevailed, taking down the Yetis, 3-2 in 10 innings. The Statesmen didn't take the lead until later in the game. Richard Bland took the lead in the top of the fifth when Ashley Beamon doubled, scoring two runs, to give Richard Bland the leg up, 2-1. The Yetis tied things up in the bottom of the sixth on a rbi single. With the game tied at two in the top of the tenth, Sara Graham doubled, scoring one run to push the Statesmen ahead. Beamon and Shelby Godfrey each collected two hits for Richard Bland. Beamon led with two runs batted in, going 2-for-4 on the day. McKynzi Dawson started the game for Richard Bland and recorded 18 outs. Dawson earned the win for Richard Bland giving up five hits and two runs over six innings, striking out one and walking three. Elexyona Moore pitched four innings of zero-run ball for Richard Bland in relief. The reliever gave up two hits, striking out four and walking two.

 

In game two, Richard Bland fell to the Yetis, 4-3. The Statesmen were the first to get on the board in the second inning when Elexyona Moore singled, scoring one run. Richard Bland added one run in the third after Jessica Taggart singled. Cleveland tied the game in the bottom of the third on a single and a tag up. A double in the fourth, gave Cleveland the 4-2 lead. Taggart went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Richard Bland in hits. Shelby Godfrey, Taggart, and Moore each drove in one run for the Statesmen. Taylor Green took the loss for Richard Bland. The starter went four innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking one.

 

In game three, Richard Bland had trouble keeping up with Cleveland, in a 1-9 loss Monday afternoon. Cleveland got on the board in the first inning scoring two runs. They also added one in the second, one in the third, four in the fourth, and one in the fifth to solidify the win. Richard Bland scored one run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run to left field by Shelby Godfrey. McKynzi Dawson led the team with two hits in two at-bats. Godfrey went 1-for-2 at the plate with one run batted in. Sara Graham stepped in the circle first for Richard Bland. The right-handed pitcher allowed two hits and two runs over one inning, striking out none and walking three. Moore took the loss for Richard Bland. The righty went three innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, striking out one and walking one.

 

The Richard Bland College softball team next hosts Pitt Community College on Friday, March 15th in a 2pm conference doubleheader. Game three on the series will take place at Pitt Community College on Sunday, March 17th at 12pm.
