Softball Grabs Two Over Bulldogs

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Softball team moves to 7-8 overall, 7-7 in conference play and after taking on Pitt Community College Friday and Sunday afternoon. The Statesmen hosted the Bulldogs in a doubleheader Friday and traveled to Pitt on Sunday or game three.

 

In game one, Richard Bland defeated Pitt 9-8 after taking the lead late in the game. The game was tied at eight in the bottom of the sixth when Shelby Godfrey drew a walk, scoring one run. Pitt got on the board in the top of the first inning after a single and double scored four runs. The Bulldogs also added one in the second, and third. Richard Bland captured the lead, 9-8, in the bottom of the sixth when Madison Nixon singled, scoring three runs, and Godfrey walked scoring one run. Nixon led Richard Bland with two runs batted in. Godfrey and Sara Graham each collected two hits for the Statesmen. Ashley Beamon led with four walks. Taylor Green opened the game for Richard Bland. The right-handed pitcher allowed six hits and six runs, over three innings, striking out three and walking one. Elexyona Moore earned the win for Richard Bland. Moore allowed four hits and two runs over four innings, striking out seven and walking three.

 

In game two, Richard Bland rallied to defeat the Bulldogs 13-5 in the night cap. Richard Bland trailed by as many as four runs during the game. Sara Graham collected three hits in three at bats in the win. Graham doubled in the third innings, and singled twice in the fifth inning. Pitt was the first to get on the board in the second when a singled scored one run. The Bulldogs added to their early lead in the top of the third on a single and an error. Richard Bland flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on five hits to take a 6-4 lead. Richard Bland scored seven runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Taylor Green singled, scoring two runs, Madison Nixon hit a fielder's choice scoring one run, Jessica Taggart drew a walk scoring one run, McKynzi Dawson singled, scoring two runs, and Graham singled, scoring one. Moore earned the win in the circle for Richard Bland. The right-handed pitcher gave up four hits and four runs over three innings, striking out two and walking none. Dawson appeared in relief for the Statesmen.

 

In game three, Richard Bland couldn't keep up with the Bulldogs and fell 4-12 in five innings. Pitt got on the board in the bottom of the third after a single and two walks, scoring three runs. Brookelynne Winterson showed depth in the lineup by leading the Statesmen with two hits in two at bats. Taggart, Godfrey, and Nixon each drove in one run for the Statesmen. McKynzi Dawson took the loss for Richard Bland. The right-handed pitcher went two and two-thirds innings, surrendering three runs on two hits, striking out one and walking three.

 

The Richard Bland College softball team next travels to Louisburg College on Sunday, March 24th for a doubleheader beginning at 2pm. Game three will take place in Louisburg, NC on Monday, March 25th at 4pm.
